The first trailer to Sony’s “I can’t believe it’s not 1999” 2018 anti-hero movie Venom has just dropped, and if the title isn’t a dead giveaway, it looks like Carnage is going to be the focus of the upcoming sequel.
As fans of the original film, it’s campy, ridiculous plot and endearingly dedicated performance from Tom Hardy were more than enough reason to anticipate a sequel, but with the post-credits of the film teasing the existence of Kletus Casady, played by Woody Harrelson no less, expectations shot through the roof.
The trailer is brisk, but meaty, showing how things with Eddie Brock have progressed since the events of the first film. He’s still living the single life, his relative growing pains bonded to a symbiotic alien have gone about as well as anyone could’ve hoped (read: figuratively, literally messy) and now, may have a problem brewing, as a lethal injection gone wrong seems to have unleashed another Venom-like symbiote from serial killer Kletus Casady, who goes by the name Carnage.
With Andy Serkis at the helm for this sequel, it looks like the film is keeping in with the irreverent Lethal Weapon -lite tone of the first film, along with the camp that made the first such a fan favorite. Either way, Spidey fans can rejoice at what looks to be an eventful fall. After many world-related delays, it looks like we’ll finally have a chance to sink our teeth in two months before Spiderman: No Way Home when it releases in theaters on September 24th.
